Coup in Gabon as Military take over the government
Military has taken over the government of President Ali Bongo through a coup. The military in Gabon just announced they have taken power through a coup from the present ruling government of Ali Bongo, where the ailing leader’s family has actually ruled Gabon for 50 years.
Ali Bongo, who suffered a stroke in October and got treatment in Morocco, took over from his father Omar Bongo as president in 2009. He won re-election in 2016 in a tight contest, in an election believed to be marred by violence and allegations of fraud.
They took control of the nationwide radio station at 04:30 regional time to make a brief broadcast where a “ National Restoration Council ,” was announced.
Tanks and armed lorries can be seen on the streets of the capital Libreville.
