Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Iyayi-Lamikanra grant pardon to 55 inmates awaiting trial at Rivers State prisons. The Chief Judge said the move is to decongest the Port Harcourt prison which she confirms is the most congested prison in the country. She said more inmates will be granted a pardon. According to the Chief Judge of Rivers State, the exercise will be a continuous one.
The Chief Judge, however, said that inmates standing trial for capital offences will have to wait for the prerogative of mercy by the governor. We learnt that the Chief Judge has now released a total of 77 inmates through the Goal Delivery programme in the prison premises, having carried out a similar exercise in Degema prison.
