The House of Representatives has asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to in one week explain the utilization of N1.75 trillion bailout funds to states.
The House also requested its ad-hoc committee on bailout funds, which is yet to submit her report to accelerate action on it and investigate the payment of salaries in Kogi State.
While deliberating the motion entitled “Urgent need to save the people of Kogi State,” Karimi, who said the bailout funds which is solely for payment of salaries were funded by the public finance of the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the parliament, has authority to query the bailout funds disbursement and utilization.
According to Karimi, the state of Mr. Edward Soje, who is said to have been owed 11 months’ salary and reported to have committed suicide owing to the fact that he could not meet up with his responsibilities as a husband, especially when his wife had delivered triplet last week, is the state of a good number of the Kogi State civil servants both at the state and local councils.
Karimi stressed that something need to be done urgently to avoid more people from committing suicide.
Nkiruka Onyejeocha , representing PDP in Abia also questioned the good judgment of our leaders. According to her, the state governments have not been able to utilize the bailout funds earlier collected yet they are seeking for more from the Federal Government.”
The motion put up by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, was eventually adopted by the house.
